Cherries So Ripe Song Card

Well hello there! We’ve had a very fun and very full summer, but with one kid in kinder and the other starting preschool, I have suddenly (and finally!) found myself with time to develop more resources for this space once again. I am absolutely thrilled to bits to be back.

I’m kicking off my return to regular posting with a new folk song card. This is a free resource to print out and laminate for your home or classroom. I put the folk song as well as either the game or recommended activity for the song on the card so that it is easy to refer back to as you are working with your kids. I’ve had readers who have compiled all these free song cards into a sweet little collection, and I always love seeing them! Send me an IG message if you’ve done this, it always makes my day!

If you’re new here (hello, friend!), I usually share one folk song weekly, posted on Friday. I then spend the following Monday through Thursday sharing additional resources and ideas to work on different musical skills using that folk song. So with that being said, I’ll be back on Monday with a fun free download to play with our folk song of this week, Cherries so Ripe!

Cherries So Ripe is an example of a Street Cry– back in the day, long before commercial jingles or annoying pop up ads, there were street vendors advertising their wares by singing loudly through the streets. Their aim was to attract curious buyers to purchase their goods, so they developed trademark songs so that the customers would know exactly what was for sale.

In the school where I taught we had a tradition of teaching a bunch of street cries to the 2nd grade classes and then having a “market day” where their teacher could come in and “shop around” as the students were singing. Oh, it was so much fun! This culminating project was a wonderful way for the children to experience the song in its authentic setting, experience polyphonic singing (different vendors were singing different street cries at the same time), and for their classroom teacher to see what we had been working on as a class during our time together.

I actually recently found a really fun book of Street Cries and I am excited to share that resource with you next week.

This specific street cry is one of my favorites, because I love cherries. LOVE. And who can argue with what these bargain prices? A penny a pound? Yes, please!

And just for fun, here’s a few other cherry themed songs!
