Helloooooooo! (Pretend I’m saying that like a ghost!)–today I’m sharing a very ghostie folk song for Folk Song Friday! This one is a FAVORITE, especially around my older students. In fact, a group of my 5th graders invented the game for this folk song, and it was so fun to see them work together to create the game, and it was really special to teach it to my other students.
This folk song is a bit trickier melodically, so once again some ghostie vocal play is key to in-tune singing! I’ll have a vocal play activity sometime next week, so be sure to check back then! I also talked about this process in my Skin and Bones post, you can read about that here!
This song can also be sung as a round, and older students love hearing the layers as the song is sung. There are different opportunities for entries, but the simplest is having another part enter after the first line is sung, and there can be 4 parts when sung that way. If you are singing this as a round, have the students sing through the song at least twice, but it’s fun to keep it going and enjoy the sound bath! I have my students repeat the last phrase as they come to it so that we can all eventually end together, but there are lots of ways to do it. Again, I’d only do this with older students, because for our younger friends just singing it in tune is already a challenge, and part work should only begin once the students have a strong ear for in-tune singing.
Let me know if you give this one a try, it’s so fun for Halloween!
