Happy folk song Friday! I’m happy to be back after a few weeks of crazy colds running through my family. And just in time, today I’m sharing a fun, lovey dovey folk song for Valentine’s Day!
This is an example of a riddle song, which are very important in the folk tradition. I’d sing the first two verses to my students on one day and then send them home to discuss amongst themselves and their family, and then when we met back together they’d share their ideas before I sang the third verse. It was always so fun to hear their many many ideas!
I think it would also be fun to have older students come up with their own riddles (or find some online) and then set it to a folk song melody or a pentatonic tone set for a composition activity! They would have so much fun trying to stump each other!
For my younger friends, this song makes such a lovely lullaby. I sing it to my babies almost every time I put them to sleep. It’s kind of magical to get to the third verse right as my little baby’s eyes flutter closed.
