Let Us Chase the Squirrel Song Card

Hello friends and happy Folk Song Friday! Today I’m sharing another fall-related folk song, and it is a favorite–I think any game that includes a chasing element is always a big hit with the kids. Make sure to grab the free download.

I know squirrels aren’t strictly fall-ish, but when I think about squirrels I think about acorns and gathering their nuts for the winter, so I think it totally works! And I’m planning a super fun printable with this song for Monday, so check back then!

This song is perfect for practicing feeling the steady beat (that’s even incororated into the game.) It’s also great for quarter and eighth note dictation, a [drm s] tone set, and it even has one half note to begin feeling that longer rhythm within the beat structure. With young kids it’s all about EXPERIENCING these elements before labeling them for the children, so this is a perfect song to tuck into your “prepare” folder for half notes. If you’re interested in learning more about the prepare/present/practice method, look into the Kodaly method, my training seriously changed everything about how I teach. It’s magical!
