Happy folk song friday! Today I’m sharing one last little back to school-inspired folk song, Mary Wore Her Red Dress. To be honest, it’s not really about school, but I can totally imagine a sweet little girl excitedly getting all dressed up in her new back to school clothes, can’t you? And you can tell in the song, Mary is a girl who knows what she wants! And since she loves wearing red soooo much, I just had to give her red hair as well. She’s a fashion icon and we love her for it.

The song card has instructions on how to play a simple game with this song. It is a game I invented, so it is not traditional to the song, but it is simple and fun. Make sure to check out the included instructions!
This song also makes a great first day of school/introduction song to build a feeling of community and welcoming atmosphere. After learning names, go around in a circle and sing (for example,) “Peter wore his green shirt… Michael wore his blue jeans… Carrie wore her yellow bow…” etc. You could also have students draw a quick “self portrait” and sing about the clothes they are wearing. Oo, maybe I should make a sheet about that too!
I have such a fun activity planned for this song on Monday, so make sure to check back then for another free resource! Click the link below to get the song card!
