As autumn comes sneaking in I thought it would be fun to find a cozy little apple themed folk song to share this week. I didn’t want something too autumn-y, not just yet. But I think we hit the jackpot with this one, it’s just right for the time between school starting and Halloween. And the best part is that it can span all of Autumn! The verses celebrate the autumnal harvest rituals, and that is certainly something to celebrate all autumn long.
Another reason I wanted to find an apple themed folk song for this week is because my family’s anual Apple Cider Day is coming up! We pick and press my parents' many apples into delicious golden cider. We meet up with my sister’s family and my parents and it’s so cozy to have the kids running around while the air smells like apples. It is probably the best day of autumn for me! I love the family centered fun, plus we go home with enough cider to last us the year! (Okay, okay, I ration it pretty intensely. It’s hard work to get all that cider!)
This folk song provides opportunities for movement to each phrase, which is a wonderful way for our little learners to connect to the song. Their understanding grows as the movement makes the words concrete for them. It’s like a mini session of dramatic play snuck into the folk song! I also included an idea for some improvisation, which would be great as a whole group or as a challenge for older kids. The trick is to keep the pattern of the song consistent, as there are important repeating phrases. Can your improvised verse keep the original structure of the song?
I hope you enjoy this folk song and let me know if you sing it in the coming weeks as we tiptoe into autumn.
