After learning the song and playing with the ideograph, I have one more activity to share today with Scotland’s Burning. Isn’t it so amazing all the different ways there are to work with one deceptively simple folk song?
Today’s activity is a two parter. After downloading the file, print and cut out the cards. First, see if your child(ren) can retell the story by putting the cards in the right order. Sing through the song to check your work! (Side note, I did this activity with my nephew and he enjoyed ordering the song cards over the ideograph, kind of like a puzzle. It was such a fun way I didn’t even think about doing!)
Then re arrange the cards to create an entirely new arrangement of the song using the motifs of Scotland’s Burning. Can you sing through your new version? Mix them up again, can you sing your new way? The possibilities are endless. This arrangement activity is a fun and approachable first step into the world of composition.
Did you know that many famous masterworks were created by rearranging simple folk melodies? The power of a folk song never ceases to amaze me.
